The Southwestern Maine Activities Association established the Russell McClellan Award in 2025 to annually recognize an official that embodies the characteristics of Russell McClellan. Russ was a longtime soccer official, basketball official and softball umpire in southern Maine.
The SMAA recognizes yearly an official who exemplifies support for education-based athletics and who genuinely enjoys being involved in school-based athletics bringing a sense of joy to officiating.
The Award is named after Russell Eugene McLellan who exemplified these traits.
Potential recipients may be nominated by any Association School to the SMAA Culture Committee. The SMAA Culture Committee will recommend one recipient to the membership for consideration.
Nominations are due from member schools by February 1st. The McLellan Award will be presented at the SMAA Citizenship Banquet in early April.
